Chongqing Temple — exquisite Song Dynasty Buddhist sculptures preserved for centuries
Jade Emperor Temple — stunning glazed 28 Lunar Mansions sculptures
Faxing Temple — Tang Dynasty architecture with remarkable original carvings

Practical Tips

  • Why this matters: Over 70% of China's pre-Yuan Dynasty (1271) wooden architecture is in Shanxi Province. Southeast Shanxi has the densest concentration.
  • Temple visits: Many temples are managed by local villagers. Opening hours can be irregular — arrive before 5pm.
  • Photography: Flash photography is prohibited inside all temples. A fast lens (f/1.4-2.8) is essential for interior shots.
  • Access: Jincheng has HSR connections to Zhengzhou (2hrs) and Xi'an (3hrs).
  • Budget: ~1,500-2,500 CNY per person for 4 days.
