Arrive Xining
Arrive in Xining, the gateway to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Rest and acclimate. Explore Dongguan Mosque and the old Muslim quarter for dinner.
Qilian Grassland & Zhuoer Mountain
Drive north into the Qilian Mountain range. Cross alpine meadows at 3,000m+ and visit Zhuoer Mountain for panoramic views. Stay in Qilian town.
Giant Buddha Temple & Zhangye Rainbow Mountains
Visit Zhangye's Great Buddha Temple (34m reclining Buddha, one of China's largest). Afternoon: Zhangye Danxia National Geopark β the famous Rainbow Mountains. The colors at sunset are otherworldly.
Jiayuguan Fortress β Dunhuang
Visit Jiayuguan Pass β the western terminus of the Great Wall. This fortress guarded the Silk Road for centuries. Continue to Dunhuang, an ancient desert oasis town.
Mogao Caves & Mingsha Sand Dunes
Morning: Mogao Caves β China's greatest treasure of Buddhist art. 735 caves with 45,000+ sqm of murals spanning 1,000 years. Afternoon: Mingsha Mountain sand dunes. Optional: camel ride at sunset.
Da Qaidam Emerald Lake
Cross into the vast Qaidam Basin. Visit the stunning Emerald Lake (ηΏ‘ηΏ ζΉ) β a series of turquoise mineral pools surrounded by white salt flats. Truly otherworldly.
Chaka Salt Lake β Qinghai Lake
Visit Chaka Salt Lake β the famous 'Mirror of the Sky'. Walk on the crystal-white salt flats that perfectly reflect the sky. Continue to Qinghai Lake for a lakeside sunset.
Qinghai Lake β Xining (Departure)
Morning sunrise at Qinghai Lake. Try making Tibetan sachets with locals. Return to Xining for departure.
