Gannan Road Trip
Arrive Lanzhou
Arrive in Lanzhou, Gansu's capital. Try the legendary Lanzhou beef noodles (ηθι’) at a local shop β it's a completely different experience from what you'll find outside China.
Bingling Temple Grottoes
Take a boat across Liujiaxia Reservoir to reach the Bingling Temple Grottoes β a UNESCO-quality Buddhist cave complex carved into 60m cliffs overlooking the Yellow River. 1,600+ years of Buddhist art.
Labrang Monastery & Thangka Painting
Visit Labrang Monastery, one of the six great monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism. Walk the world's longest prayer wheel corridor (3.5km). Afternoon: try your hand at traditional Thangka painting with local masters.
Ganjia Grassland & Langmusi
Explore the vast Ganjia Grassland with nomadic Tibetan families. Try making traditional wool felt accessories. Continue to Langmusi, a frontier town straddling the Gansu-Sichuan border with rival monasteries on each side.
Zhagana β Lost World Village
Drive the scenic Luoke (Rock) Road to Zhagana, a remote stone village surrounded by towering peaks that looks like a scene from a fantasy film. Hike through the Cloud Grassland for aerial views of the valley.
Zhagana Fairy Meadow β Hezuo
Morning hike to Fairy Meadow (XiannΓΌ Tan) for magical morning misty views. Afternoon: drive to Hezuo city.
Milarepa Buddhist Pavilion β Lanzhou
Visit the impressive nine-story Milarepa Buddhist Pavilion β the tallest in the Tibetan world. Return to Lanzhou for departure.

Practical Tips
- Altitude: 2,900-3,500m β much easier than central Tibet. Still drink plenty of water.
- Best season: JuneβSeptember for green grasslands and wildflowers. October for golden autumn colors.
- Photography: Zhagana is a photographer's dream β bring a wide-angle lens for the dramatic landscape.
- Respect: Gannan is deeply religious. Don't photograph monks without permission. Walk clockwise around stupas and monasteries.
- Budget: ~3,000-5,000 CNY per person.
