Central Plains Heritage Trail
Arrive Zhengzhou → Dengfeng
Arrive in Zhengzhou (HSR hub). Drive to Dengfeng. Visit Zhongyue Temple — one of China's oldest Taoist temples. Evening: explore Dengfeng old town.
Shaolin Temple & Songyang Academy
Full day at the legendary Shaolin Temple — watch monks practice kung fu. Visit the Pagoda Forest (cemetery of eminent monks). Afternoon: Songyang Academy — one of China's four great ancient academies.
Dengfeng → Luoyang & Longmen Grottoes
Drive to Luoyang, the ancient capital of 13 dynasties. Visit the magnificent Longmen Grottoes — 2,345 caves with over 100,000 Buddhist statues carved into limestone cliffs over 400 years.
Luoyang (Departure)
Morning: visit Luoyang Museum or White Horse Temple (China's first Buddhist temple). Departure from Luoyang or Zhengzhou.
Practical Tips
- Shaolin kung fu shows: Performances at 9:30, 10:30, 11:30 AM, and 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 PM daily.
- Longmen Grottoes tip: Go early morning or late afternoon for the best light on the carvings.
- Best season: April–May (peony season in Luoyang!) or September–October.
- Transport: Zhengzhou is a major HSR hub — easy access from Beijing (2.5hrs), Xi'an (2hrs), Shanghai (4hrs).
- Budget: ~2,000-3,000 CNY per person for 4 days.
