Shaocheng CityWalk: The Most Authentic Old Chengdu Experience

schedule10 min readcalendar_todayMarch 27, 2026personChinaTravelFix Team

Walk through the ancient Shaocheng district — People's Park tea culture, art-filled Citang Street, panda walls, and Kuanzhai Alley's courtyard heritage. This is where real Chengdu lives.

💡
少城片区 — the spiritual root of old Chengdu. While Yulin represents Chengdu's modern community culture, Shaocheng is where the city's most authentic traditions live. Bordered by Babao Street to the north, Dongchenggen Street to the east, Tongren Road to the west, and Jinhe Road to the south — this is the core of the old city. Only after walking Shaocheng can you truly say you've experienced Chengdu. 🐼

🚶 CityWalk Route

🚇 Metro Line 2, People's Park Station Exit B → People's Park → Citang Street → Dongsheng Street → Binsheng Street → Kuanzhai Alley → Kuixinglou Street / Jixiang Street

Stop-by-Stop Guide

☑️ People's Park 人民公园

Founded in 1911, originally called Shaocheng Park (少城公园). Today it's a blend of local leisure culture and patriotic heritage. The most iconic experiences: the marriage market corner where parents post singles ads, and the legendary tea houses.

Skip the famous Heming Tea House (鹤鸣茶社) — locals prefer Shaocheng Tea House (少城茶莊) inside Shaocheng Yuan. Stone bridges, pavilions, lotus ponds — grab a covered-bowl tea (盖碗茶) and Chengdu street snacks by the water. Pure bliss.

Besides tea, catch kung fu tea performances and Sichuan Opera face-changing shows. Ear-cleaning masters wander through periodically. You could easily lose an entire afternoon here.

☑️ Citang Street 祠堂街

Separated from People's Park by just one road, Citang Street has been reborn as a century-old art boulevard. Heritage buildings now house boutique hotels, streetwear brands, fragrance shops, cafés, and pop-up art exhibitions — many of them free.

☑️ Dongsheng Street & Binsheng Street 东胜街·斌升街

The perfect CityWalk streets — coffee shops, restaurants, tea rooms, and boutiques clustered together, yet blissfully uncrowded on weekdays. On Binsheng Street, don't miss the giant panda mural wall (打卡墙) — a must-shoot spot for visitors! 🐼

☑️ Kuanzhai Alley 宽窄巷子

Originally a Manchu garrison built by Nian Gengyao during the Qing Dynasty, and now a living snapshot of old Chengdu. Three parallel lanes — Broad Alley (宽巷子), Narrow Alley (窄巷子), and Well Alley (井巷子) — lined with siheyuan courtyard houses. Creative shops, tea houses, cafés, boutique hotels, and bars all coexist in this uniquely Chengdu atmosphere.

☑️ Kuixinglou Street & Jixiang Street 奎星楼街·吉祥街

These two streets are pure food heaven — far better than eating inside Kuanzhai Alley itself. After exploring the alleys, walk here for dinner. Authentic street snacks and creative restaurants line both sides.

ℹ️
Pro tip: Start at People's Park around 2 PM. Spend an hour at the tea house, then walk through the streets. You'll hit Kuanzhai Alley around golden hour and finish with dinner on Kuixinglou Street. Budget 3-4 hours.
