Temples, pandas, bamboo forests, Qingcheng Mountain, Dujiangyan, and Sanxingdui — a 5-day Chengdu itinerary for those who want more than just hotpot.

💡
Half a month later, I finally sat down to write up my Chengdu tips. Five days of temples, tea houses, pandas, mountains, and ancient civilizations. I fell in love with the bamboo. Here's the full breakdown.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

5 Days in Chengdu

Day 1 (Afternoon)

People's Park + Kuanzhai Alley

People's Park (人民公园) — Crowded, yes. Heming Tea House is packed. But the park always has quiet corners to discover. Don't miss the Xinhai Autumn Baolu Memorial (辛亥秋保路死事纪念碑) — there are usually old men practicing calligraphy nearby.

Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子) — Essentially a commercial street, but pleasant enough for a walk even without buying anything. Pro tip: The Wuliangye Cultural Experience Hall gives you a free mini bottle of baijiu just for checking in! 🍶

Day 2

Wuhou Shrine + Qingyang Palace + Du Fu Thatched Cottage

A perfect — if physically demanding — day. All three are absolutely worth visiting.

Wuhou Shrine (武侯祠) — Not huge, but essential for Three Kingdoms fans. Who doesn't love Prime Minister Zhuge Liang? ⚔️

Qingyang Palace (青羊宫) — Lives up to its reputation as the "Premier Taoist Temple of Western Sichuan" (川西第一道观). Exquisite architecture and a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.

Du Fu Thatched Cottage (杜甫草堂) — The reconstructed thatched hut has a long queue that's probably skippable, but everything else is stunning. The bamboo groves especially! 🎋 If you still have energy, walk through Huanhua Creek (浣花溪) next door — beautiful scenery.

Day 3

Giant Panda Base + Wenshu Monastery + Sichuan Museum + Chunxi Road

Giant Panda Base (大熊猫繁育研究基地) — Go in the morning! Plan your route in advance for the best experience. 🐼

Wenshu Monastery (文殊院) — Incense burns thick here. The blend of natural and cultural landscapes is perfectly balanced — just walking and looking around is deeply peaceful.

Sichuan Museum (四川博物院) — Not enormous, so 2.5 hours is enough for the current exhibitions. Closes at 6:30 PM. (Was supposed to visit Chengdu Museum but booked the wrong date — Sichuan Museum worked as a substitute since it's near Du Fu Cottage.)

Chunxi Road (春熙路) — Very crowded. Quick photo stop at the IFS climbing panda and done.

Day 4

Qingcheng Mountain + Dujiangyan

Qingcheng Mountain (青城山) — Buy the round-trip shuttle bus ticket at the station exit — walking to the mountain gate takes forever. Summit hike is about 2.5-3 hours. Recommended route: hike up the left path, cable car down the right side.

Dujiangyan (都江堰) — The route is straightforward. Critical warning: Check which station your return train departs from! The south gate is at Liduigongyuan Station (离堆公园站), while Dujiangyan Station is several km further — don't get caught running! 🚄

Day 5 (Morning)

Sanxingdui Museum

Sanxingdui Museum (三星堆博物馆) — Extremely crowded. If you want a human guide, arrive early — they get booked up fast. The audio guide is also very detailed. One complaint: the museum stamps dry slowly and smudge onto your hands. Bring a tissue! 🏛️

ℹ️
Transport tips: Day 1-3 use Metro + Didi within the city. Day 4: intercity train to Qingcheng Mountain, then shuttle. Day 5: bus or Didi to Sanxingdui (~1 hour from downtown).
