Beijing's Most Classic Hutong CityWalk: Temples, Drums & Lakeside Sunsets

schedule12 min readcalendar_todayMarch 24, 2026personChinaTravelFix Team

The one hutong walk I'd recommend above all others β€” from Ditan Park through Yonghe Temple, past the Drum Tower, and ending with sunset beers at Shichahai. 6-7 km of pure Beijing.

πŸ’‘
If I could only recommend one Beijing citywalk route, this is it β€” no hesitation. Ancient temples, old hutong neighborhoods with real street life, the Drum Tower, and Shichahai lake at sunset. Take your time. This is what Beijing feels like when you're not rushing between ticket counters.

Route & Logistics

πŸ“ Start: Navigate to Ditan Park North Gate
πŸš‡ Subway: Line 5, Hepingli Beijie Station Exit D
πŸ“ Distance: 6-7 km | ⏱ Duration: 5-7 hours including rest stops

Full route: Hepingli Beijie Station β†’ Ditan Park β†’ Wudaoying Hutong β†’ Yonghe Lama Temple β†’ Confucius Temple & Guozijian β†’ Beiluogu Lane β†’ Drum Tower Street β†’ Drum Tower β†’ Bell Tower β†’ Yandai Xiejie β†’ Shichahai β†’ Shichahai Station πŸš‡

Stop-by-Stop Guide

β‘  Ditan Park (Temple of Earth)
Enter from the North Gate. Follow the wheelchair tracks to find Shi Tiesheng's trees and Yu Hua's trees (both famous writers loved this park), and look for "Ditan's Sea" (εœ°ε›ηš„ζ΅·). It's a peaceful place β€” sometimes you'll hear someone playing saxophone 🎷 in a quiet corner.

β‘‘ Wudaoying Hutong
A hutong packed with character β€” boutique shops, specialty coffee β˜•, and cozy little bars 🍹. More artsy than touristy. Very photogenic, genuinely worth the stop.

β‘’ Yonghe Lama Temple
"Unreasonably effective" is how locals describe praying here β€” especially for career and business luck πŸ™. The temple architecture is gorgeous. You can buy prayer beads from roadside vendors and have them blessed inside. If you're in Beijing, you kind of have to visit.

β‘£ Confucius Temple, Guozijian & Chengxian Street
Chengxian Street is the last street in Beijing that still has its original ceremonial archways. Dappled shade on red walls and grey tiles β€” absolutely beautiful for photos πŸ“Έ

β‘€ Beiluogu Lane (εŒ—ι”£ιΌ“ε··)
Just one street away from the famous (crowded) Nanluoguxiang, but a completely different world β€” quiet hutong life, no commercial noise. Ruo Bar, V7 Coffee, and Jim CafΓ© are all great for photos.

β‘₯ Drum Tower
Put on Zhao Lei's song "Gulou" and go stand next to it. The street signs and red walls nearby make great photo backdrops πŸ“·

⑦ Bell Tower
More of an old-Beijing-life vibe here β€” locals playing badminton, kicking shuttlecocks. Real neighborhood energy.

⑧ Yandai Xiejie (Tobacco Pipe Lane)
Small street full of quirky snack shops and retro stores. Tangfang Jia β€” go to the 3rd floor rooftop terrace for a jaw-dropping view: hutong rooftops, Shichahai lake, and the Drum & Bell Towers in the distance πŸ‘€

⑨ Shichahai & Houhai
End the day here. Feel the breeze off the lake, listen to live folk music drifting from the Houhai bars, and catch the sunset β€” the "orange sea" reflection on the water is legendary. Stay for the blue hour photos πŸ“Έ. This is Beijing at its best.

ℹ️
This route is perfect in every season β€” golden ginkgo leaves in autumn, snowy temples in winter, green willows in spring, sunset swims in summer. Bring comfortable walking shoes and a sense of curiosity.
