Beijing with Kids: 5-Day Family Trip (Tried & Tested)

schedule10 min readcalendar_todayMarch 24, 2026personChinaTravelFix Team

A real family's 5-day Beijing trip — from the Forbidden City to Universal Studios, with kid-tested tips on food, transport, and how to survive the Great Wall with little ones.

💡
Took the high-speed train from Shanghai — 4.5 hours to Beijing. Heads up: the fast trains during holidays sell out instantly, you'll need to grab tickets the moment they drop. We stayed at the Swissôtel Beijing (Hong Kong Macau Center) — right at the subway exit, couldn't be more convenient, and the rooms were nice.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

5 Days with Kids

Day 1

Temple of Heaven + Wangfujing

Arrived around 1 PM, checked into the hotel, then headed to Temple of Heaven. It's huge inside — the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (祈年殿) is genuinely stunning, great for photos. By evening, walked around Wangfujing and tried the supposedly Faye-Wong-approved Fangzhuan Chang Zhajiangmian.

Day 2

Tiananmen → Forbidden City → Tsinghua University

All three need advance reservations! At Tiananmen Square, we used the "no bag" security lane — stuffed everything into our jacket pockets, brought a cloth bag folded up inside a pocket, pulled it out after security. Perfect hack. Crossed through to the Forbidden City, rented audio guides, saw the Treasure Hall and Clock Exhibition — absolutely worth it but our legs were dead after. Took a cab to Tsinghua University — enter via the West Gate, rent bikes inside, ride to the famous Second Gate and Tsinghua Xuetang. There's a cute campus merch shop too.

Day 3

Universal Studios Beijing

Rented Harry Potter robes the day before via Xiaohongshu — a delivery rider brought them to us at the subway station. Much cheaper than renting inside the park. The Harry Potter area is a must — the kids went crazy for the wand interactions. Hit all the main rides, and the crowds thinned out noticeably in the evening.

Day 4

Great Wall → Bird's Nest → Nanluoguxiang

Took subway Line 4 to Tucheng Station, then Bus 877 direct to the Great Wall. You can take a slide car up to North Tower 4, then walk from there. We skipped the slide car and hiked up on foot — turned back at North Tower 4, which was plenty for the kids. Took 877 back to Tucheng, then one more subway stop to the Bird's Nest and Water Cube for a quick photo. Then hopped on the subway to Nanluoguxiang for evening snacks.

Day 5

Qianmen & Dashilan → Departure

Spent the morning wandering Qianmen Dashilan — super lively, tons of food stalls, just eating and browsing. Headed back to the hotel, grabbed our luggage, and caught the train home.

Food Reviews (Honest Takes)

  • Nanmen Sharou (South Gate Hotpot) — Be careful, lots of fake copycat locations! We went to the Dongdan branch. Call ahead to get a queue number. Thick, rich sesame sauce. Genuinely great.
  • Siji Minfu (Roast Duck) — We ate here on New Year's Eve. Waited from 4:30 PM to past 9 PM (luckily the hotel was nearby so we waited there). The duck was good but the flavor leans sweet — not my personal favorite, but still solid.
  • Fangzhuan Chang Zhajiangmian — It was... fine. Not bad, not amazing. The experience of eating it is the point, really.
  • Snack picks: Wenyu Cheese (文宇奶酪), Purple Skin Yogurt (紫皮酸奶), Heyan Meat Pie (河沿肉饼), Longyan Tea Shop (隆延茶铺) — all legit good.
  • 🚫 Douzhi'r (fermented mung bean juice) — I took one tiny sip and gagged for about 10 minutes. Memories that last a lifetime. 😂
ℹ️
Hotel pick: Swissôtel Beijing (港澳中心瑞士酒店) — subway station literally at the doorstep, very convenient for families with kids.
