5 Days in Xi'an: The Deep Dive — Walls, Warriors & ¥1 Beef Skewers

schedule12 min readcalendar_todayMarch 28, 2026personChinaTravelFix Team

A 5-day, 4-night Xi'an deep dive — Muslim Quarter back alleys, Tang dynasty ruins, the full city wall walk, Terracotta Warriors + Lishan Garden, and ¥1 beef skewers you'll never forget.

💡
Xi'an is DELICIOUS. ¥1-per-skewer beef that never gets old — I had a fistful every single day. Here's the full 5-day, 4-night breakdown from my April trip.

🛌 Where to Stay

Near Muslim Quarter on Xiaopiyuan Street (小皮院街) — 18-minute walk to Sajinqiao Metro. Everything in the city centre is reachable by shared bike.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

5 Days in Xi'an

Day 1 (Evening)

Muslim Quarter → Drum Tower → Bell Tower

Arrived late afternoon. Headed straight to Muslim Quarter (回民街) — it's THE snack street, but the real gems are in the back alleys around Dapiyuan Street (大皮院街).

Drum Tower & Bell Tower (钟鼓楼) — didn't go up, just admired them from below. The illuminated towers at night are stunning.

🚶 Everything walkable from accommodation.

Day 2

Wutai Temple → Sajinqiao → City Wall → Shuyuanmen → Beilin Museum → Zhang Xueliang's Residence

Xiwutai Yunju Temple (西五台云居寺) — A Tang dynasty imperial temple with unique multi-level architecture rising from flat ground. Located near Sajinqiao.

City Wall (城墙) 🎫¥45 — Entered at Anding Gate (安定门), walked to Yongning Gate (永宁门). Passed Hanguang Gate Museum with visible wall cross-section ruins. No backtracking needed!

Shuyuanmen (书院门) + Beilin Museum (碑林博物馆) 🎫¥85 — Right next to each other. Rich calligraphy heritage.

Zhang Xueliang's Residence (张学良公馆) — Xi'an Incident historical site.

🚲 Shared bikes for longer legs, walk for short ones.

Day 3

Daming Palace → Big Wild Goose Pagoda → Tang Dynasty Night City

Daming Palace Ruins (大明宫遗址公园) 🎫套票¥88 — Huge park. The buildings are gone — only rammed-earth foundations remain. Includes Danfeng Gate Museum + Ruins Museum + shuttle bus.

📍 Suggested route: Danfeng Gate → Ruins Museum → Hanyuan Hall → Linde Hall.

Big Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔) 🎫¥30 — The best photo angles are actually from outside!

Tang Dynasty Night City (大唐不夜城) — Performances run 19:00-22:40.

🚇 Metro Line 4 connects all three (Daming Palace B exit → Big Goose Pagoda B exit → walk to Night City).

Day 4

Terracotta Warriors → Lishan Garden

Terracotta Warriors (兵马俑) + Lishan Garden (丽山园) 🎫¥120 combined — Far from city centre, budget half a day.

🚌 Direct shuttle bus from Sajinqiao Metro (Exit B) or Drum Tower, ¥30 (includes Pits 1-3 guided tour). They'll offer a jade shop detour — you can skip it.

Free shuttles run between Warriors and Lishan Garden.

Lishan Garden is where Qin Shi Huang's tomb actually is — very large. Take the ¥15 in-park shuttle, it's worth it.

🚌 Return shuttle ¥30.

Day 5 (Morning)

Xi'an Museum & Small Wild Goose Pagoda → Depart

Xi'an Museum (西安博物院) 🎫Free — Not huge, quick visit. Couldn't get Shaanxi History Museum tickets, so this was the backup. 😭 Small regret.

Small Wild Goose Pagoda (小雁塔) — Same compound as the museum, free entry. The pagoda top retains its original Tang-dynasty form — quite special.

Then head to the airport!

ℹ️
Budget tip: Shared bikes + walking covers 90% of the old city. Only need Metro for Daming Palace (Day 3) and the direct bus for Warriors (Day 4). Total transport is very cheap.
